New research published in the journal Nature reveals that keeping coal in the ground is the only way to contain ongoing warming trends. The study breaks down CO2 allocations by region and also by fuel type. By their calculations a third of oil reserves, half of gas reserves and 80% of coal reserves should remain unused to reach the 2 degree target by 2050.
